Hi! My name's Michelle and I'd like to welcome you to Own Futures!
We offer a bespoke careers education service that can be tailored to the needs of your school – both primary and secondary. We can play the role of Careers Leader within your school: organising events, planning and delivering employability lessons, developing your STEM offer, engaging business volunteers to work with your students. In addition we can help you write a robust careers strategy and policy to ensure you are working towards achieving all the Gatsby Benchmarks. We can also provide staff and governor training.
Engaging parents in their Own Futures through workshops on CV writing, personal statements and interview skills. Also work with young people in settings other than schools.
After completing a degree in English Studies at the University of Sunderland I gained my PGCE in English and Special Needs at Leeds University. I was a teacher for nearly twenty years, teaching English and Media at secondary schools in Kirklees and Calderdale. For the last 10 years I was also Head of Careers and Business Enterprise. I left teaching in 2018 to set up Own Futures.
I am a member of the Career Development Institute and have gained the level 6 Certificate in Careers Leadership. I successfully led Park Lane Academy to achieving the Quality in Careers Standard three times. I organise and run careers events, plan and deliver taught programmes, engage with local and national companies, have built relationships with the LEP, Business in the Community, The Federation of Small Businesses and Business Growth Calderdale and write strategy and policy. I have successfully delivered careers lessons and activities in both primary and secondary schools.
When I’m not working I enjoy spending time with my husband, daughter and step-daughter. I am a member of the National Trust and love exploring new places. I love travelling and have been to China and India as well as interrailing around Europe in my youth! I also enjoy nothing more than settling down with a bowl of popcorn, at home or the cinema, and watching a good film.
